“The Slumber Thief” was created by Phyllis Chen and Robert Dietz on commission by Opera Cabal, in 2012. Guided by dramaturg, Joseph Cermatori (Assistant Professor of English, Skidmore), the work conjures a minute dreamscape using toy pianos, music boxes, and an array of sonic and visual oddities. Praised by the New York Times for her "delightful quirkiness," Chen's collaborations with Dietz evoke the fabric of a child's unconscious, both fabulous and slightly terrifying. After its Chicago premiere at the Logan Center for the Performing Arts, “The Slumber Thief” was subsequently presented at Roulette (NYC).
